Gum Grafting

When bone loss has occurred, the gums can recede which can lead to an esthetic concern and to extra sensitivity due to exposed root surfaces.

Recession typically occurs because of bone loss from periodontal disease or the protruded position of the tooth in the jawbone.

Gum grafting is a corrective procedure that restores the gum to its natural, healthy state.

The goal of a gum graft has multiple purposes:

     -to cover exposed root surfaces.

-to gain attached tissue where the tissue is very thin and loose

-to bulk an area of depression in the ridge

The gum graft is typically taken from the patient's palate and sometimes donor tissue from a tissue bank is used as well.
